The later caddy top surmounted by later brass finials, foliate pierced soundfrets to top and sides, the door flanked by two brass capped columns, the moulded rectangular trunk door with a circular brass lenticle above a rectangular plinth on bun feet, with circular paper label inscribed 135, the 28 cm. (11 inch) square brass dial with foliate cast cherub spandrels to silvered chapter ring signed Fromanteel & Clarke, the matted and foliate engraved centre with ringed winding hole and silvered subsidiary seconds ring above, pierced black painted hands, the long duration (probably month-going) fully latched movement with five ringed pillars, anchor escapement; door key

Specialist note

Christopher Clarke was born circa 1668 and listed as from Kelloby which according to Loomes may have been Killerby, Co. Durham. He married Anna Fromanteel, the daughter of Ahasuerus Fromanteel the Younger, in 1694 and then went into partnership with either Fromanteel the Younger or Abraham Fromanteel in Amsterdam. He inherited a good amount of the Fromanteel fortune and later struck up a partnership with Roger Dunster. He must have returned to London for in his will he is listed as residing in New Ormond Street, Parish of St. Andrew Holborn. Middlesex.
