Lot 453Coming of age as an artist in Paris and the South of France during the 1920's and 30's, Marcel Dyf was naturally influenced by the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists - which can be seen in his love of outdoor subjects and the light effects of water (seen in lots 453 and 454). However, Dyf also looked often to Rembrandt and Tiepolo, as is especially clear in the shimmering brushstrokes rendering the flesh of his muse, Claudine Godat, who was to become his wife (lot 455). The reflections of the canals and lush pastoral scenes betray an artist both enamoured of the canon and alive to the avant-garde.
