Specialist note

When facing an empty canvas, I try to create something that is extremely challenging to me. Chinese calligraphy has always been of one of my interests, yet I am aware of how difficult it is to create as an art form. I have often included text in my work, however for the first time I was confronted with the dilemma of not understanding the language I was about to paint. By using a script that is unknown to you, it becomes a form of abstraction. This was of interest to me and in many ways I approached this work as an abstract painting. Using the text to create free floating forms, I thought of Gaitonde and I knew that for most of my fellow Indians, this would be seen as an abstraction.
