The blade carved with scrolling vines with chrysanthemums and with a paulownia near the hilt, the handle and guard gilt-copper and decorated on the surface with chrysanthemum crests of Nashimoto no Miya and paulaownia crests, the hand guard terminating in a phoemix head, the scabbard black-lacquer and mounted with gilt-copper hardware carved with chrysanthemums and vines against a nanako ground

Specialist note

Nashimoto no Miya was the brother of the Taisho Emperor.
As with the previous lot, this sword was presented to a high-ranking American diplomat in appreciation of his service as laison between the American occupation forces and the Imperial family.
