William Henry Rinehart (1825-1874)
'Winter'
marble
oval, 24¾ x 21½ in. (62.9 x 54.6 cm.)

(Possibly) Augustus J. Albert, Baltimore, Maryland.

Specialist note

The present marble, along with its pendant, Spring (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York), were among William Rinehart's earliest works executed in Florence. After completing these two works in Italy along with a similarly composed pair, Morning and Evening (circa 1856, Museum of Fine Arts, Springfield, Massachusetts), the artist returned to his native Baltimore, Maryland in 1857. A plaster plaque of Winter currently exists in the collection of The Peabody Art Collection in Baltimore, Maryland.
