Specialist note

Appropriate for a dining-room hearth designed in the George II 'Roman' fashion, these term-tapered and truss-scrolled pilasters bear garlanded busts of harvest deities, with the vine-festooned wine-deity Bacchus accompanied by the agriculture deity Ceres, who is garlanded with corn and flowers. Similar term figures feature in a chimney-piece pattern issued in Abraham Swan's, Collection of Designs in Architecture, 1757.
