Heinrich Carl Reinhold (Gera 1788-Rome 1825)

Reinhold arrived in Italy in 1819 with fellow landscape painter Johann Christoph Ehrard (1795-1822) and his oil on paper made on the spot in places like Olevano were quickly popular and sought after by the German community in Rome.
The present oil on paper is a view of the Monti Prenestini with the village of San Vito Romano, situated about 40 kilometers east of Rome, overlooking the valley di Sacco and Monte Guadgnolo in the farground. There is another version of this work in the Germanisches National Museum, Nuremberg (see D. Riccardi, Gli artisti romantici tedeschi del primo Ottocento a Olevano Romano, Milan, 1997, p. 48, ill. 55). Reinhold often made repetitions of the oil studies that he sold. This practice is, for example, documented for a group of twelve oil on paper that the artist sold to Karl Friedrich Schinkel (see Heinrich Reinhold. Italianische Landschaften, Gera, Kunstgalerie, 1988, pp. 28-31).
