Specialist note
The attribution to Patel has been confirmed by Dr. Natalie Coural. She suggests that this drawing dates from circa 1690 and compares it to a slightly later drawing in black chalk, A large temple near a lake with fishermen, now in the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh (N. Coural, op. cit., p. 307, no. PAP211). The handling of the brown wash, the classical ruins and the figures and livestock in the foreground show the influence of Claude on Patel's work.
