Of rectangular form with shaped rectangular glazed panel bordered and surmounted by foliate and floral naturalistic carved branches with birds, within a moulded frame border, the decoration refreshed in areas

Specialist note

The triumphal-arched glass (glace de trumeau), incorporated in an overmantel tablet, reflects the French 'picturesque' style encouraged by the 'India' (Chinese) painted papers imported by Parisian marchands merciers in the mid 18th Century . Exotic and richly polychromed birds perch and fly amongst arched arbours formed by the entwined branches of flowering shrubs.
