Château Haut-Brion--Vintage 1990
Pessac (Graves), 1er cru classé. Château-bottled
Tasting note: In April 1991, this and the above first growths were each tasted at the respective châteaux. (One has to be there in person and by appointment. No use airily summoning a cask sample). It was opaque, hard yet fragrant, fleshy and elegant. By the time I had got round to it there was little left at the MW tasting (Nov 1994) but what little there was, was lovely. Unmistakably Graves with its soft, earthy character. Also, unmistakable at a Rodenstock tasting of first growth '90s: easy fruit, slightly sandy texture (1998). More recently, at the MW Haut-Brion rasting (Janaury 2000): now medium-deep with a relaxed open mature rim; rich, chocolatey, mocha nose, opening up beautifully; sweet, soft, firmer than the '89, perfectly balanced with a rich, fragrant yet dry finish. Finally, at Penning-Rowsell's '10-year' tasting, very similar to the previous note. Surprisingly sweet, lovely flavour, shape and texture yet with the life-supporting grip (my highest mark, with Margaux and Lafite) Last tasted June 2000 ****(*) 2005-2025 Michael Broadbent, Vintage Wine
