A GROUP OF ANTIQUE RUSSIAN ENAMEL JEWELS
Comprising two egg pendants by Fabergé, one of ridged gold design with applied cabochon sapphire, 1.6 cm long, with workmaster's mark A.H. for August Holmström and St Petersburg assay mark for 14k gold (pre 1896), the other decorated with royal blue enamel, 1.7 cm long, with workmaster's mark F.A. (Cyrillic) for Fedor Afanassiev and Russian assay mark for silver, two further pink and blue enamelled eggs, with Russian assay marks for silver and six further gold, silver gilt and enamel eggs, all circa 1910; and a red and white enamelled Red Cross bar brooch by Britzin, 4.8 cm long, with workmaster's mark I.B. (Cyrillic) for Britzin and St. Petersburg assay mark for 14k gold (1908-1917), with reverse engraved 'Hopital des noy le 27.12.1915 R.P.'

Specialist note

Ivan Britzin was one of Fabergé's notable competitors.Trained by Fabergé, Brtizin closely followed his master's style, and focused, in his later years, on frames, cases and smaller objets de vertu.

After the outbreak of World War I, the Red Cross motif became a favourite on Russian jewels, employed both by Fabergé and other jewellers, such as Britzin, on enamelled eggs and small jewels. The reference was to the support and dedication of Empress Alexandrovna Feodorovna for the Russian Red Cross, who, as their patron, presented these jewels to her colleagues.
