circa 1865
The silver and silver-gilt eight pointed star set with paste diamonds enclosing a central medallion surmounted by an Imperial crown and centred by a red guilloché enamel cross within wide red guilloché band set with the motto of the Order Amantibus justiam, pietatem, fidem 'For Lovers of Justice, Pity and Fidelity', with a hinged pin on the reverse
3¾ in. (9.5 cm.) high

Specialist note

Initially, the insignia with diamonds was presented to both Russians and foreigners, but from 1874 onwards, only foreign dignitaries received it, and usually only during state visits.
