How to sell

Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn
The little Jewish Bride (Saskia as Saint Catherine) (B., Holl. 342; H. 154)
etching with touches of drypoint, 1638, a very good impression of this rare, lightly bitten print, with traces of burr, trimmed on the platemark on three sides, just inside the platemark at the top, skilfull repairs at the upper sheet corners where previously hinged on the reverse, otherwise in generally good condition
S. 108 x 80 mm.

Specialist note

The title The Little Jewish Bride is misleading as this etching is infact Saskia, the artist's wife, in the guise of Saint Catherine - accompanied by the toothed wheel of her martyrdom. Executed four years later than The Great Jewish Bride (see next lot), the image is one of the most sensitive and intimate of the artist's portrayals of Saskia, drawn on the plate with great freedom and deftness of touch.
