etching with engraving, 1633, a fine impression of the rare first state (of four), before the additional shading to the horse's tail and elsewhere, watermark Arms of Burgundy and Austria (cf. Hinterding A-a-a, dated 1632), trimmed just within the image above and below, with two small thin patches and associated minor paper losses at the upper right, a flattened central horizontal crease, a repaired tear at the right sheet edge, the upper right corner replaced and the tips of the upper left and lower right corners re-attached, lesser defects, laid on a thin support

Specialist note

This large, early etching is almost certainly based on one of the same subject by Van de Velde, and Rembrandt clearly enjoyed depicting a wealth of intricate detail: 'The story takes place before a crumbling house with a well. The forecourt is very real, and has been described by the artist with loving care. Every crack in the brickwork is recorded with a passionate accuracy that would meet the approval of the most pedantic surveyor.' (C.
