Specialist note
This large, early etching is almost certainly based on one of the same subject by Van de Velde, and Rembrandt clearly enjoyed depicting a wealth of intricate detail: 'The story takes place before a crumbling house with a well. The forecourt is very real, and has been described by the artist with loving care. Every crack in the brickwork is recorded with a passionate accuracy that would meet the approval of the most pedantic surveyor.' (C. White, Rembrandt as an Etcher, Yale University Press, New Haven and London, p. 214).
