Specialist note

Johnson was a pupil of William Müller (1812-1845), whom he accompanied on his expedition to Lycia (see lot 185). He visited Bettws-y-Coed with David Cox, Sen. in 1844 and on other sketching tours to North Wales. In his fluid use of watercolour the influence of both Müller and Cox can be seen.
