Probably the artist's family, and by descent to
Mrs P. Howard; Sotheby's, London, 22 March 1979, part of lot 5, where purchased by the present owner as 'Jacob drawing Water at the Well for Rebecca and Her Flock'.

Specialist note

The subject is taken from Genesis, ch. 29, 1-10.

West painted this subject twice, one in the Chrysler Museum, Norfolk, Virginia (von Erffa and Staley, 247), and the other, much closer in composition to the present drawing, is unlocated but known from engravings.
