Specialist note

In the foreground men are digging sand to spread, along with bones and ashes, on the clay soil of the heathland to improve the drainage and increase fertility, this improvement of the soil was part of the changes taking place during the Agricultural Revolution and 'Turnip Townshend's' system of crop rotation.
