Neapolitan School (19th Century)

Mount Vesuvius erupted on the 10 September 1810. This picture was executed on the following day, when the fury of the eruption had abated somewhat and people flocked to see the volcano, sailing on the Bay of Naples under the ashen sky and recording the experience for posterity.
