The superstructure with a pierced brass gallery, panel and gilt-composition Egyptian figures above two drawers, with a secretaire drawer below, fitted with three drawers and a leather writing surface, on a tapering column with stylised gilt-composition dragons, the downswept legs with brass caps and castors, the locks stamped 'Hobbs & Co., London, Lever', re-gilt

Specialist note

Designed in the French-antique fashion popularised by T. Hope's, Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, (1807), the lady's writing-table is of 'Grecian-black-figured' and 'boulle-inlaid' kingwood. Its 'chiffonier' book-shelf, with Grecian ribbon-fretted china-rail, is guarded by Egyptian caryatic vestals, while Minerva's draco/dragons guard its octagon herm-tapered pillar, whose hollow-sided 'altar' plinth displays triumphal palm-flowered tablets and is raised on a Grecian-scrolled 'claw' with bacchic paws.
