Specialist note
Designed in the French/antique fashion as popularised by the engraved works of Thomas Sheraton, author of The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book, 1791 and The Cabinet-Maker, Upholsterer and General Artist's Encyclopaedia, 1803, the bowed and hollow-cornered commodes are embellished with golden medallions and lozenged tablets of richly figured mahogany. But their robust character, with brass-moulded borders and tablets accompanied by inlaid Grecian-black ribbon bands and 'boulle' medallions, also relates to the early 19th Century manufactures of George Bullock (d.1813) (C. Wainwright et al, George Bullock, London, 1988).
