Specialist note

Dürer follows the text of the gospel quite closely. Joseph of Arimathea is at the right, depicted as a wealthy burgher of Nuremberg, holding Christ's feet. Despite this being a nocturnal scene he did not attempt to depict the darkness, as he would in the last plate of the series, the Resurrection (lot 83), created about thirteen years later.
