black silk with a tiny white spot motif, the tea-length skirt with integral trained panel, the fitted jacket with peplum and four pointed tabs to the back, and closing with five lozenge-shaped faceted buttons, labelled, and inscribed to separate tape label '31.542'

Specialist note

The tabs to the jacket evoke 17th century tailoring, and combined with the floating 'train' panel on the skirt, provide an excellent example of Cristobal Balenciaga's mastery of incorporating historical references into what is, in fact, very modern couture.
