More Information
Specialist note
The upper part of this mirror, in particular the shell cresting and scrolled arch at the top of the plate, relates to the pair of mirrors supplied between 1722 and 1726 to John Meller of Erddig, Clwyd by John Belchier. A pair of closely related mirrors was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 21 November 1985, lot 111. Another pair, attributed to John Belchier, is illustrated in Ronald Phillips Ltd, catalogue April 2005, pp. 90-93. A closely related mirror was sold by the late Anne, Lady Hollenden, Christie's, London, 23 November 2006, lot 31 (£50,200 including premium). Interestingly, the latter mirror had distinctive wall fixings to the reverse, similar to those on the present lot.
