THIRD QUARTER 18TH CENTURY, THE NEEDLEWORK LATE 18TH EARLY 19TH CENTURY
The waved toprail above a pierced splat with scrolls and foliage, the with outswept scrolled arms, the padded seat with associated close-nailed needlework with the Fitzgerald armorial and motto 'Fortis et fidelis', on cabriole legs headed by carved foliage, joined by stretchers, on claw-and-ball feet
37½ in. (95.5 cm.) high; 26¼ in. (67 cm.) wide; 23½ in. (60 cm.) deep

The needlework: Sir Augustine Fitzgerald (d. 1834), Newmarket on Fergus, Co. Clare, before 1821.

Specialist note

The armorial on the seat is for Sir Augustine Fitzgerald (d. 1837), of Newmarket on Fergus, Co. Clare who in 1821 was granted a baronetcy. The baronet's insignia does not feature on this armorial, which provides a terminus ante quem for its date of manufacture. The baronetcy became extinct on the demise of the fifth baronet in 1908.
