The rectangular top with pierced gallery and hinged ratcheted reading-slope above a mahogany-lined frieze drawer flanked by small mahogany-lined drawers, above three shaped shelves the side panels with candle-slides and quatrefoil panels, the rear with small pen-drawers, on club legs

Specialist note

This writing-table's side panels and pierced gallery feature elaborate Gothic cusped quatrefoil panels, a stylistic trait that appears on furniture recorded and attributed to the Yorkshire cabinet-makers, Wright and Elwick. Richard Wright and Edward Elwick were in partnership between 1747 and 1771, and their work is discussed in 'The Wentworth Cabinet-Maker: Wright and Elwick', Christie's Wentworth sale catalogue, 8 July 1998, pp. 110-112.
