Specialist note

In a letter to Franklin Page, Reg Butler discussed his drawings, 'I draw not as a means of discovering sculptures, but as a pleasure and reward all its own. There is only one way to make sculpture - by making sculpture. Drawing has no place for me as a method of solving structural problems. BUT, since I am the same person when I draw as when I make sculpture they share a common identity. But since drawing moves on the whole more quickly than sculpture, it is sometimes possible to see from drawings done years before, sculptural preoccupations anticipated in the other medium' (see Exhibition catalogue, Reg Butler, London, Hanover Gallery, 1963).
