Amongst the rarest gems within the Rolex chronograph family of references 6034 and 6234 must be considered examples featuring a black dial. In 30 years of international auctions, hardly more than a handful of such watches have been offered publicly.

These black dials must be regarded as the ultimate state of the art in dial manufacturing as revealing a rich complexity of different layers applied to the metal base. In fact, the outer scientific scales are not printed on the black lacquered background but underneath and shine through in negative relief. However to further enhance its sophistication, "Rolex", "Oyster Chronographe" and "Antimagnetique" are superimposed and printed onto the black background.

Close analysis of the present dial reveals that it is identical in its layout and finish as an example described and illustrated in literature, I Cronografi Rolex - La Leggenda, Pucci Papaleo Editore, pp. 240 & 241, however mounted on a reference 6034. For an example of reference 6234 with black dial see op. cit., pp. 256 & 257.
This watch is not only an outstanding rarity in excellent overall condition but most importantly also an extremely attractive chronograph, one of the best-looking watches for daily wear.
