Each set on a shaped circular base, cast and chased with scrolls, flowers, and lion's masks, rising to a putto-formed stem with shells and garlands, the urn-form socket with conforming decoration, and detachable nozzle with flowers and gadrooned border, each putto's back engraved with two crests, each marked on base, socket, and nozzle, each base engraved with a scratchweight and numbered
10¾ in. (27.3 cm.) high; 59 oz. (1840 gr.)
One of the crests is for Hartstonge, co. Limerick (2)

Specialist note

An Irish silver basket by William Townsend and engraved with the Hartstonge coat-of-arms was sold in These Rooms, 21 October 2003, lot 373.

The figural stem of this pair of candlesticks is based on a 1747 model by Ernest Sieber (overstriking the mark of Lewis Pantin) which is illustrated in Arthur Grimwade, Rococo Silver: 1727-1765, 1974, pl. 75A.
