Carl Haag (German, 1820-1915)

The Five Pillars of Islam is the term given to the five duties incumbent upon every Muslim. One of these duties is the Shahadah, or profession of faith, which is the most important pillar and is the foundation for all other beliefs and practices in Islam.
As the most basic tenet of Islam, Muslims with repeat the Shahadah multiple times during their prayer:''ashadu 'al-la ilaha illa-llahu wa 'ashadu 'anna muhammadan rasulu-llah', or 'I testify that there is no god (ilah) but Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.'

Carl Haag, a German artist, known for his detailed watercolors of desert scenes in the Orient, has chosen to depict a Muslim in prayer, reapeating the Shahadah.
