The sitter was born in 1512, the son of Thomas, 8th Lord Clinton. In 1540 he joined Lord Lisle, Lord High-Admiral, with whom he served during the expedition to Scotland and the storming of Edinburgh in 1544. After the succession of Edward VI, Edward Clinton was appointed Lord High-Admiral, and upon the accession of Queen Mary, he was granted the special commission as Commander-in-Chief of the fleet and of forces against France and Scotland. He remained in this office after Queen Elizabeth came to the throne, and she later created him Earl of Lincoln in 1572.
In 1534, Edward Clinton married Elizabeth, the daughter of Sir John Blount, widow of Gilbert, Lord Talboys, and mistress of Henry VIII. He secondly married Ursula, daughter of William, Lord Stourton, in 1541; and thirdly Lady Elizabeth Fitzgerald in 1552. Edward died in January 1585 and is buried in St. George's chapel at Windsor.
