Specialist note

The Bates family had strong ties with India from the moment Joseph Bates (1769-1846) took advantage of the ending of the East India Company's monopoly on trade with India and started a business exporting his woolen cloth from Halifax via the burgeoning port of Liverpool. Frederick Allen Bates (1884-1957) went out to Bombay in 1907.
