Specialist note
Born in Devon, Gill sailed to South Australia in 1839. He became a prolific watercolourist in Australia, his best work including studies of the interior and its Aboriginal inhabitants (he painted the departure of Sturt's expedition in 1844 and accompanied Horrocks north of the Flinders in 1846), and Victorian goldfields subjects dating from 1852. He died destitute on the steps of Melbourne Post Office in 1880.
