More Information
Specialist note
Both sheets were part of a sketchbook dated 1783. The first drawing is related to two painted versions of the same subject, one formerly in the collection of Mr. Tankerville Chamberlayne, the other at Petworth House (see A. Chamberlain, George Romney, London, 1910, pl. XVII for an illustration of the first). Chamberlain also notes a black chalk cartoon of the composition in the Liverpool Royal Institution (op. cit., pl. LXX), and a preparatory drawing at Cambridge (op. cit, p. 362).
