GOTHENBURG, CIRCA 1800-1820, ATTRIBUTED TO PEHR GUSTAV BYLANDER
Each with a stiff-leaf carved frame, surmounted by an acanthus carved projecting cornice above an arched radiating red glass panel with gilt-leaf decoration behind, with a rectangular plate below, the reverse with a depository label inscribed 'Cheneviere, the plates and glass apparently original (2)

with Antonie Cheneviére, Paris.

Specialist note

P.G Bylander was one of Sweden's most famous and successful mirror makers of the Empire period. Active in Gothenburg between 1810 and 1852 he supplied mirrors with console tables to many great houses in Southern and Western Sweden, including Skottorp, Sperlingsholm and Stjernsund. The Nordislea Museum in Stockholm has several examples of his work.

Similar examples of Bylander's work are illustrated in Neoclassicism in the North, Swedish Furniture and Interiors 1770-1850 p.162,(ill.168), p.175 and p.207 (ill.9) and Mobler fran Sevenska Herremanshem vol. 111, p.171 (ill.1244) and p.175 (ill.1254). A mirror bearing the label of Bylanders is also illustrated in World Mirrors 1650-1900, Graham Child, fig 712.
