Specialist note

During the 1870s Grimshaw developed a reputation for depicting suburban lanes in autumn, where moonlight was filtered by an ever changing cloudscape. Whistler, a close friend of the artist, later noted: 'I considered myself the inventor of nocturnes, until I saw Grimmy's moonlight pictures'.
