EARLY 18TH CENTURY, POSSIBLY BATAVIAN
The rectangular hinged sarcophagus top enclosing a crimson velvet-lined interior, above two coats-of-arms divided by a lion's mask, the sides with carrying-handles, one hinge marked 'W 20 5/8 R.', the other hinge hallmarked
8½ in. (21.5 cm.) high; 12¾ in. (32.5 cm.) wide; 9 in. (23 cm.) deep

Bought by the present owner from Norman Adams, Ltd., 1988.

Specialist note

Batavia, modern-day Indonesia, was colonised by the Dutch in 1609 and was a major commercial centre of the Dutch East Indies throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Many Dutch families unofficially proved arms and therefore it has not been possible to identify the family's arms.
