Specialist note

Born in St. Louis in 1849, Thomas Allen was best known for his pastoral landscapes and depictions of animals. He studied art at Washington University and then traveled extensively throughout Europe and the Western United States. Allen exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1882 and eventually settled in Boston where he served as President of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and chairman of the council and faculty of the Boston Museum School of Drawing and Painting.
