Specialist note

John Stuart Mill was arguably the most important English-speaking philosopher of the 19th Century. He was influenced by the British empiricist John Locke, and he aimed to develop a positive view of the universe and its inhabitants. Formally and stylistically, the portrait anticipates Warhol's later celebrated silkscreen portraits, with its simple linear depiction against a background of limited colors.
