Note du spécialiste

Fraenkel remarks: '[Watkins] filled his pictures edge to edge with meticulous, near obsessive detail, all of it important. His large prints, the result of prodigious physical effort, have a clarity and luminance that impart a sensation of human vision intensified...the pictures constitute a virtual compendium of the expressive possibilities of light.' (Carleton E. Watkins: Photographs 1861-1874, Fraenkel Gallery, 1989, introduction)
