Lot 134THE GOLDEN BOWL
I think that it's an age-old occupation of collectors, to travel the world searching for what they love - The Golden Bowl. And there are so many interesting books about tastemakers - the people who help collectors amass their collection - particularly the various studies of Duveen. I have great admiration for dealers though I could never be one. They have to maintain a position of unqualified admiration for all they sell. In order to be a successful dealer you must suspend disbelief particularly when dealing with the work of living artists. The willingness to nurture their careers I find admirable having observed it at close range for so long - Leo and Sydney, Paula Cooper, Mary, Angela Westwater, Barbara Gladstone and Klaus. And then Bruno Bischofberger, Leslie Waddington, Larry Rubin, Jeffrey Deitch, Larry Gagosian. A good art dealer serves an extremely important function in the market. You need dealers to make markets because art is a commodity and artists need to sell their work. Of the works I'm selling here, one Albers came from Janis, a Stella from Castelli, a Lawrence Poons from Larry Rubin, a Jim Dine from Sydney Janis, a Peter Halley from Ileana Sonnabend.
