A Lacquered-Ivory and Tortoise Shell Cabinet**
Meiji Period (late 19th century)
With two large hinged doors designed with Kosekiko and Choryo opening to reveal numerous interior compartments all lacquered with birds, landscapes and fish on inlaid panels of ivory or tortoise shell, the right half with a miniature chigaidana which swivels to bring stacks of drawers to the front, sets of removable drawers above and below the central doors with landscapes and birds in bamboo, the top surface decorated with a tortoise and two flying cranes and one side pierce-carved in ivory with a thrush in a blossoming cherry tree, the opposite side and the reverse with panels of cranes and sailing vessels, metal hardware engraved with foliate scroll; set on a stand with four scroll feet, the front with sliding panels decorated with hawks and two doors with cranes containing more drawers, the interiors decorated en suite to the cabinet, the edges of the stand with railings and other architectural elements reminiscent of a Shinto shrine
