A Three-Tier Lacquer Incense Box (Kobako)
Edo period (19th century)
The cylindrical box decorated on the exterior in gold hiramaki-e and gold foil with the hollyhock crest of a branch of the Tokugawa family and with scrolling grasses on a nashiji ground; interior and base matching nashiji
3 7/8in. (8.6cm.) high

Note du spécialiste

An inscription on the lid of the box indicates that this piece was handed down in the Tokugawa family. The fine quality of the lacquer suggests this may be the work of an inro maker.
