Gonzaga worked as a stage designer at the Teatro della Scala, Milan, before moving to Saint Petersburg in 1793. There he designed stage decorations for the Imperial Theatre. The two present drawings were executed during the artist's Russian period and have a Russian provenance. A drawing by Gonzaga similar in size and style was with Flavia Ormond, Italian Old Master Drawings, New York, 1997, no. 14.
