A VICTORIAN MAHOGANY CHEST
BY GILLOWS, CIRCA 1870
With gadrooned feet and gadrooned rosewood handles, ash and mahogany drawer linings, the top drawer stamped GILLOW & CO., L5854, the back panelled, the locks stamped LANGEBEAR/ BIRM
36 in. (91 cm.) high; 36 in. (91 cm.) wide; 21 ½ in. (55 cm.) deep

Specialist note

The late-Regency style, which never quite died out in Gillows' Estimate Sketch Books in the mid-19th century, underwent a noticeable, but today little-known, renaissance at the firm in the 1860s and early 1870s. Approximately thirty pieces of pure late-Regency form are shown in their drawings during these years, this chest evidently being part of that output.
