A PAIR OF WILLIAM IV MAHOGANY BEDSIDE CUPBOARDS
CIRCA 1830
Each with solid rectangular three-quarter gallery above a hinged flap between reeded uprights with foliate capitals, on slightly outsplayed legs with paw feet, one gallery and one handle replaced, each with paper label printed in red 'FORT WILLIAM 1948' one printed 'No. 178' the other printed 'No. 303'
31½ in. (80 cm.) high; 21 in. (53.5 cm.) wide; 17 in. (43 cm.) deep (2)

Possibly Robert, 2nd Earl Grosvenor, later 1st Marquess of Westminster (cr. 13 Sept 1831) (1767-1845) and by descent.
Probably a lodge on Reay Forest Estate, Sutherland.

Specialist note

The Eaton Hall china-railed 'commode' night-tables have palm-flowered and reeded 'Pompeian' pillars, whose 'Grecian' scrolls terminate in 'Roman' lion-paws in the 'antique' fashion promoted by the architect C. H. Tatham, and popularised by Thomas Sheraton's, Cabinet-Maker, Upholsterer and General Artist's Encyclopaedia, 1803-1806.
The 'Fort William' label may be a trans-shipment label for goods sent to furnish Bendor, 2nd Duke of Westminster's (d. 1953) Scottish lodge at Reay Forest, Sutherland.
