The verse by Tyrtaeus (middle of the seventh century BC) is in Didot's French translation and treats of the second Messenian War, as is that of Callinus of Ephesus (seventh to sixth century BC) who endeavours to rouse the indolent Ionians to a sense of patriotism, especially against the Magnesians.
