The portrait shows Charles-Moyse Roubel (1709-76) and his wife (1718-91) Sarah (ne Salmon), together with their three of their children, Paul (1742-94), John (1744-1826) and Catherine (1746-87).
Charles-Moyse Roubel was born in Ruffec in the Poitou-Charente District of France. He came from a family of Huguenots, who fled to Britain to France to escape persecution. Charles-Moyse settled in Bath, where his children were born. He was a jeweller by profession, as was his son Paul.
Paul married Mary Cary in 1768. They had two children. The younger, Catherine, born in Bath in 1773 married the Rev Thomas Gray, a Protestant minister from Scotland. Rev Thomas Gray was Charles Walford's maternal great, great, great grandfather.
