溫斯頓·丘吉爾(Winston Churchill)是二十世紀最重要的政治人物與演說家之一,他同時也是一位成就斐然的畫家。繪畫創作恰好為他緊張的政治生活提供了一種平衡。

丘吉爾開始畫畫的時間相對較晚,始於1915年。當時他在加里波利戰役後被迫辭去海軍大臣職位,而這項新發現的愛好後來成為他終身的熱情,在他人生最艱難的時期為他帶來了慰藉、創造性的滿足感以及表達自我的方式。

丘吉爾沒有受過正式的繪畫訓練,但他以慣有的活力與決心投入其中。他偏愛風景與靜物,描繪的對象多為查特韋爾莊園的家中景致,以及他在歐洲和地中海地區旅行時所見的風光。早期作品受到印象派畫家的影響,尤其是他們對光線與色彩的運用。丘吉爾主要使用油畫創作,這與他大膽、直覺式的繪畫風格十分契合。

丘吉爾的代表作品包括《查特韋爾莊園的金魚塘》(The Goldfish Pool at Chartwell, 1932年),這幅畫寄託了他對肯特郡故居的喜愛;另一經典之作為《庫圖比亞清真寺宣禮塔》(Tower of the Koutoubia Mosque,1943年),畫中勾勒出遠眺馬拉喀什城廓的風光。邱吉爾遊歷法國南部、北非等日照充沛之地,深深影響其創作用色,畫作中常見澄澈明快的藍調、翠綠與赭色。

丘吉爾的藝術造詣於在世之時便已獲得認可。1921 年,他為避開外界過度關注,化名「查爾斯·莫林」(Charles Morin)首度參展。及至 1947 年,其畫作聲名遠播,更獲封皇家藝術學院榮譽院士。他所著的《畫畫作為消遣》(Painting as a Pastime,1948)真切闡述自身藝術觀點,認為繪畫既是撫慰心靈的療愈活動,亦是紓解政務重壓、抽離公職紛擾的精神寄託。

儘管丘吉爾作畫是為了個人樂趣,如今他的畫作已被視為其遺產中舉足輕重的一部分。世人向來將他與果敢行事、滔滔雄辯劃上等號,而這些畫作恰恰展露了他內斂深沉、靜思自省的另一面。他的許多畫作由私人收藏,另有部分作品則陳列於現由英國國民信託代管的查特韋爾莊園之內,讓後人得以透過這些畫作一窺這位二十世紀複雜人物的內心世界。
