XU BEIHONG (1895-1953)
A Standing Horse
Scroll, mounted and framed, ink on paper
112 x 39 cm. (44 x 15 1/4 in.) ??
Inscribed and signed, with three seals of the artist
Dedicated to Fuchu
Dated winter, twenty-sixth year (of the Republic, 1937)

Note:
The inscription on this painting comes from a poem from the famous poet Du Fu, and expresses grief over the desolation of the country. Xu depicted this horse during the start of the Sino-Japanese War. Xu's motto was 'to contribute all I have to the nation and fulfill my every duty as a citizen'.
With his paintings, Xu not only educated those outside China about Chinese art by sending his paintings across Asia for exhibitions, but he also donated all proceeds from their sales to help people whose lives were destroyed by the war, or to families whose breadwinners were killed in action.
