Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn
Christ at Emmaus: The smaller Plate (B., Holl. 88; H. 121)
etching, 1634, without watermark, a very good impression, showing a little wear under the table but printing strongly elsewhere, with comparatively wide margins, one or two spots of foxing, minor skinning at the upper sheet edge on the reverse, otherwise in very good condition
P. 102 x 73 mm., S. 120 x 88 mm.

J.-K. Brönner (1738-1812), Frankfurt (L. 307), with his duplicate stamp (not in Lugt); presumably sold by C.G. Boerner, Leipzig, 5 October 1874.

专家说明

This small, intimate scene is typical of Rembrandt's treatment of scenes involving the resurrected Christ. In contrast to the conspicuously dramatic theatrical compositions illustrating Jesus's life as a man, the treatment here is more atmospheric. Rembrandt executed two etchings of this subject, and in this smaller version he reduced the content to concentrate on the figures as they realise that the man before them is the risen Christ.
